Among the oldest and most spiritual time systems developed by humankind is the Islamic calendar – Chand ki tarikh<\/a> in Urdu. The lunar-based calendar system dictates the religious and cultural ways of life of the 1.8 billion Muslims across the world, dictating the time of year during which key Islamic events, festivals and religious duties must be observed.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Chand Ki Tarikh?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Chand ki tarikh literally means in Urdu and Hindi the moon date, based on the Islamic Hijri calendar, which counts the moon days. The Islamic calendar is entirely lunar (in contrast to the solar Gregorian calendar of most of the world), with 12 months that alternate between 29 and 30 days, producing a 354 or 355 days year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The importance of Chand ki tarikh\u00a0 today is much more than that of keeping time. It is an attachment to Islamic customs that were established 1,400 years ago and forms the basis of deciding religious activities like Ramadan, Eid festivals and Hajj pilgrimage dates.<\/span><\/p>\n

In what today is called Chand ki tarikh, variations arise differently based on geographical location and sight of the moon. Today the Islamic chand ki tarikh in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh is 9 Rabi al-Awwal 1447 and in the Arab nations and other world countries 11 Rabi al-Awwal 1447.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is due to the fact, that the Islamic months determine the beginning of the new month by observing the physical event of the new moon and by the fact that this may be different due to the geographical and weather conditions of a certain region. The present date of the Islamic calendar is thus not one across the world producing local differences in accordance to local moon viewing.<\/span><\/p>\n
